MigrationWare migrates Scandinavian Airlines information warehouse to Windows

MigrationWare has concluded an agreement with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) to migrate a major SAS application from its IBM mainframe to the Microsoft Windows platform.

MigrationWare has concluded an agreement with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) to migrate a major SAS application from its IBM mainframe to the Microsoft Windows platform.
The migration centres on the move of the SAS information warehouse application from the IBM mainframe to a Windows platform.

For SAS, it was critical to benefit from the server's added functionality, the platform's reduced costs and dramatic improvements in performance which allowed it to speed up the time it takes for the application to run.

The move of this strategic application will enable SAS to leverage its substantial investment in its information warehouse and at the same time reduce the ongoing costs of the application.

After investigating the options, MigrationWare, a Micro Focus partner, was retained by SAS to perform a proof-of-concept project, where a subset of the application was successfully migrated and performance tested on the Windows platform. As a result, MigrationWare was retained to perform the balance of the application migration.

Using a combination of Micro Focus and Microsoft technologies, MigrationWare is migrating SAS's information warehouse, a mainframe-based COBOL, DB2 application, to Micro Focus COBOL and Microsoft SQL server running on a Windows server platform.

Peter Schmidt, SAS Senior Manager of CphPy systems, said since SAS already makes extensive use of Micro Focus technology, moving to the new platform would be a natural extension and simple transition for SAS's existing development and support staff.

Joao De Oliveira, Sales Director at MigrationWare, said the use of Micro Focus products on the Windows platform not only simplifies the actual transition of the application, but also ensures the experience of existing users of the application remains largely unchanged.

"Mainframe customers make substantial investments in legacy applications to support key business processes. But to remain competitive and deliver more value, IT managers face mandates to reduce costs and drive business agility," said De Oliveira. "We are pleased to have this opportunity to assist SAS in attaining their business objectives."
